The Internet Technology is here to stay. It’s everywhere—in the mall, with free wi-fi connections, at school, in the library where it is used for research, in laboratories— for testing new medicines to cure diseases. We now live and breathe Internet technology. But what’s in it for us? Besides from making our lives easier, we are pretty much dependent on it to make the flow of things smoothly. Business and routine life has been heavily relying on Internet. But of course, with the technology just around the corner, we have to be well-informed about what the Internet technology is all about. Here are 10 key internet technology terms that you need to know.
Wi-Fi- is short for wireless internet. It allows you to surf the internet through a wireless connection anytime, anywhere.
Domain Name- it is your identity over the internet. It is where you will be accessed, say for search engines, www.google.com the domain name here is google. The www is a particular host server, while the .com indicates the purpose. Fo0r example, some organizations prefer .org while some schools have a .edu domain name extension.
Host- in the internet technology, this means any computer which has a full two-way access to other computers on the Internet. It contains a specific “local or host number” which, together with the network number, forms its unique IP address.
Internet Address- also known as IP address is a unique computer host location on the internet. It is where you can be traced in the internet.
E-Mail- or electronic mail is the exchange of computer-stored messages by telecommunication. With an e-mail you can share letters, files or even pictures and videos as long as you do not exceed the file attachment. It also allows you to store contacts, through your address book.
Binary- refers to a digital encoding/decoding system in which there are exactly two possible states.
Firewall- protects the resources of a private network from users from other networks
Access Log- the Access Log is basically just a list of all the requests for individual files which the people have requested from a Web site. These files will normally include the HTML (hypertext-mark-up language) files as well as their imbedded graphic images the rest of the associated files. It is sometimes referred to as the “raw data” and it can be analyzed and summarized by another program.
Cache- it is a place to store something temporarily. You have to be aware that the files you automatically request by looking at a Web page are stored on your hard disk in a cache subdirectory which is under the directory of your browser.
BitTorrent- is a content distribution which enables efficient software distribution and peer-to-peer sharing of very large files, such as movies and/or a complete set of the season of a particular TV shows by enabling users to serve as network redistribution points.
These above technology terms may be a bit overwhelming and intimidating terms for a non techy person but are well defined to give you a brief understanding what they stand for its importance.
