Even the happiest of people go through low points every now and then. Slumps happen for many reasons: winter weather, struggles at work or at home, or for no obvious reason at all. Luckily, if you’re stuck in a slump there are a few things you can try to get yourself feeling happy and motivated again.

Find Inspiration

There are endless sources of inspiration and motivation available to help you boost yourself out of your slump. You might find inspiration through reading self-help books, listening to positive podcasts, or following inspiring social media personalities. Often, these have advice and challenges to help you overcome whatever it was that landed you in this mood. Whatever it is you prefer, try to focus on your favorite sources of positive inspiration and tune out the negativity.

Focus on Self-Care

Self-care is important for everyone. It’s easy to put yourself on the back burner when you’re so focused on work, family, and friends. But if you find yourself stuck in a slump, upping your self-care habits can go a long way. Think about what it is that makes you feel totally happy and relaxed. That might be spending a day at the spa, getting a pedicure, or even just hanging out at home all day and not having to do anything at all. Try to make caring for yourself a regular priority so you don’t fall back into another slump.

Exercise

When you’re feeling down, going to the gym might be the last thing you want to do. However, exercising can be a terrific mood booster, especially if you do it regularly. You don’t have to go to the gym and lift weights; you could go for a relaxing walk, a jog, a swim, or even out dancing. Just find whatever form of physical activity relaxes you and makes you feel your best, and go do it.

Plan Something to Look Forward To

Maybe you’re feeling burnt-out from doing the same thing day in and day out. Being stressed out at home or work every day with no end in sight can be extremely taxing. Try to plan something in the near future that you can get excited about, whether that’s a vacation, going to a concert, or doing something fun with your family. Having something exciting to look forward to can help distract you and get you out of that slump.

Get Support

You don’t have to go through low periods in life alone, so find your support network. Admittedly, sometimes it’s hard to reach out to others and admit that you’re not feeling your best. However, if you can get past that difficulty, it can improve your mood to talk through your feelings with a trusted friend or family member. If you’d rather seek professional, unbiased help, talking to a therapist can be a game changer.

If you’re stuck in a slump and unsure how to motivate yourself, try some of these uplifting tips. You’ll be back to your usual self—or better—in no time.
