What is Animation?

The method in which the shape and motion change is the creation of illusion by means of swift display of a series of static images which minimally differ from one another. There are special artists named animators, who dedicate themselves to in the field of creation of animation. Animations are recorded on analogue and digital media. Analogue media like motion picture film, flip book, video tape and digital media like flash animation, animated GIF, or digital video are the means of recording the animation. To display animation, a computer, digital camera, or projector are used.

Types of Animation

  • Traditional Animation- It was the method used for most of the animated films produced in 20th century. In this process, individusal frames of an animated film are pictures or photographs of drawing, which were drawn on paper initially. Each sequential drawing is slightly different from the previous one to create illusion of movement. These drawings are photocopied or traced onto transparent sheets, which are filled with assigned paint colors. The completed sheets are photographed against a colored background by a special camera into motion film. Some of the examples of traditional animated feature film are Pinocchio, The illusionist, Lion King, Animal Farm, etc.
  • Stop Motion Animation- It is the process of physically manipulating actual world objects and picturing them into one frame at a moment to create illusion of movement. Stop motion animations are of various types-
    • Puppet Animation- It involves the usage of puppet figures in a developed environment. Examples include The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Tale of the Fox, Corpse Bridge, etc.
    • Clay Animation- It involves the usage of clay figures or figures made with similar material to create animation. Examples include The Trap Door, The Adventures of Mark Twain, etc.
    • Object Animation- It involves the usage of regular objects which are inanimate.
    • Cutout Animation- It involves the usage of two-dimensional materials such as cloth or paper. Examples include Tale of Tales, Fantastic Planet, etc.
    • Computer Animation- It is the process of creating animation digitally on computer itself. 2D animation process focuses on image manipulation whereas 3D animation process focuses on building virtual worlds.
