One of the greatest things about obtaining a certificate in tourism is the fact that it is such as wide ranging and diverse field to work in. While it can appear to be quite a vague sounding qualification, this is actually a good thing particularly in relation to the Australian market as it means you can enter many different elements of tourism and travel.

Career Prospects With A Certificate In Tourism

So, what are some of the career prospects you can aim for after you finish your studies?

Travel Consultant

A consultancy job always sounds a little vague regardless of what industry it is in however with a tourism certificate and a qualification in this discipline then working as a travel consultant is just one of many different options. Travel consultants are all about working with people to ensure that they get the best holiday available to them in terms of luxury, price and organization. Arranging the actual vacation is just one part of this job and you will also be giving out advice for travellers.

Reservations Manager

A qualification in tourism can also lead you to working in the hospitality and hotel trade. A reservations manager has a very operational, hands on role and is mostly concerned with rate plans for hotel rooms and maximizing revenue from room sales. This can include working with head office (if it is a hotel chain) or various booking agencies to provide a competitive but attractive rate and therefore boost sales and revenue. On the day, occupancy is also another crucial part of this role.

Tourism Information

Australia is one of the prime tourism destinations in the world and, as such, there is a large market that caters directly for this. A tourism certificate can get you into tourist information positions. These are usually located in tourist hotspots – Byron Bay, Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland coast – and your job is to help tourists with what to see, what to do and where to stay as well as more general enquiries. A manager position here will see you running the office as well and be in charge of a small team.

Eco-Tourism Representative

Eco-tourism is big right now. While tourism is essentially to many areas due to the income that it brings, it also can have a negative impact on the environment however with eco-tourism you will work to provide tourists with a great service that is also environmentally friendly. This is particularly true in Australia at the minute where the environment is such as massive concern and the eco-tourism market is growing with many jobs openings particularly for those with an educational background in travel and tourism.

Opportunities

These are just a few examples of the kind of work you can go on and do with a certificate of tourism. Working with people is the connecting factor in all these jobs and while they have a different emphasis than each other, providing a valuable service and giving advice is one of the biggest aspects of a tourism related career.
