What You Should Know About Eyelash Extensions

You may have noticed  a coworker or friend’s beautiful, long, full eyelashes that look so great you’re considering getting some yourself. Before you book that appointment we’ve listed some things you should know beforehand.

Most Common Types of Lash Extensions

Depending how dramatic a look you’re going for Victoria BC eyelash extensions, lashes range from 6 to 17mm and made of synthetic, silk or mink. Once you’ve decided the lashes are applied using a specially formulated, semi permanent glue that will not irritate the eye or damage your own lashes. With allergic reactions in mind there are different types of glue based on a person’s sensitivity.

How Long Does It Take To Apply Extensions

Typically a full set of extensions takes about 2 hours with year round maintenance needed every 3 to 4 weeks. With a half set the cost is less and the effect you’re going for is still possible. The lash extensions are applied as filler to thicken your own lashes or on the outer lashes for a specialized look.

Your own lashes are as individual as you are and will determine the length or thickness recommended. Too thick could result in your own lashes falling out and maintaining the health of your own lashes is a concern. Consider starting with a half set ( 50 to 60 % ) of your top lashes and you can always add more on your next visit to the salon.

What Happens If The Glue Gets In Your Eye?

Your eyes are closed during the application so no glue will ever get into your eyes. Any chance of irritation is avoidable when you make sure the glue is safe for your eyes and doesn’t contain anything that can harm them. Formaldehyde is an example and when shipped around the world can build up during transport.

Additionally you’ll want to recognize the difference between an infection and an allergic reaction. A licensed and experienced lash technician will not let and infection occur and if you wind up being allergic to the glue nothing can prevent it from happening. This doesn’t mean the glue is in any way harmful.

Lash extensions do fall out over time as they follow the natural growth cycle of each lash. For this reason touch ups are suggested every 3 or 4 weeks to keep your extensions looking their best.

If your eyes tear up during the application speak up as it could be an allergic reaction. Swimming or showering is best avoided for the first 12 to 24 hours so any chance of water weakening the adhesive before it sets.
