Real Estate Education: A Brief Overview

It requires a lot of tenacity to earn a real estate license.  There is a mountain of detailed information to absorb as well as passing a state exam.  If you are a self-starter, are committed and determined, thrive on challenges and have a competitive spirit,  chances are,  real-estate would be a career field you would enjoy.

Here’s an outline of general requirements and what one can expect.  Keep in mind, all states vary when it comes to educational requirements; and sometimes, the requirements can differ quite dramatically, but this will get you started.

Required Education:

The required education to obtain a real estate license is pretty cut and dry:

1—a high-school diploma or GED

2—successful completion of a real estate pre-license course

3—passing the state’s real estate license exam

Cost of Courses:

There are several determiners that will regulate the cost of the required courses:

1—depth of study

2—the particular institution offering the courses

3—the state in which the courses are taken

Availability of Courses:

A variety of educational facilities offer real estate courses which include community colleges, state universities, for-profit schools, and on-line options.

1—Community Colleges:  Many of these institutions will combine real estate agent and broker courses with costs ranging from $600 to $3,000.

2—State Universities:  Real estate licensing courses run about $500 to $2,000 or more.

3—For-Profit Schools:  Broker/agent/salesperson courses are available for around $100 to $1,000 or more

4—Correspondence or On-Line:  Real estate licensing courses can cost anywhere from $150 to $1,2000

Course Content:

Below, is an abbreviated sampling of required instruction:

Real Estate Principles and Practices:  real estate lingo, knowledge pertaining to physical, legal, and economic characteristics of real estate, listing and selling of real estate, financing, licensing and professional ethics and more

Real Estate Law:   freehold and leasehold estates, conveyance of real estate, real estate managers, zoning, cooperatives, condominiums, and more

Real Estate Finance:  various financing instruments and creative financing techniques, mortgage payment concepts, economic characteristics, government activities affecting real estate financing, etc.

Real Estate Etiquette:   importance of etiquette and professionalism between agents and clients and appropriate conduct for a variety of settings

If one is really in a hurry to obtain a real estate license, they’re in luck.   Some schools offer cram classes with longer sessions, which cover several weekends.  These types of classes can, also, be beneficial for one who already understands the basics of real estate but still needs a refresher course to pass the state exam.
