How New Construction Technologies Are Making Us Safer

There have always been two major sources of risks in the construction industry: communication and planning. Due to all of the new technology being implemented for construction sites, construction workers will be able to have safer job sites, more safety standards, and better ways of sharing information. They will be able to correct any detected safety problems before they begin the project. This in turn will help to alleviate costly delays and injuries.

Drones and Robotics

Construction companies are using unmanned aerial vehicles or UVA’s as a way to help improve safety on the site. Since they carry surveillance cameras they can take photos or videos to help the superintendents keep track of the work being performed. There has even been a robot developed that can read the blueprints cut and lay as many as 1,000 bricks per hour.

Software and Apps

Virtual design and construction or VDC software will model, communicate and visualize the elements of a project before it is built. With this software the project engineers can look for risks even before they begin building the project. The VDC technology also will allow prefabrication off site allowing for a safer work environment.

3D Printing

One of the benefits of using a 3D printer is the ability to turn digital files into 3D objects. They can now print the entire project for building houses, high rises or even for bridge building. This reduces the need for human labor and therefore cuts costs and saves time.

Wearable Technology

The wearing of hardhats, and protective eye wear on site have been improved a great deal over the years. There has been a helmet developed that has a camera and sensors. This wearable item can record and store information in regards to safety and can be read digitally.

New Crane Tech

Though crane companies, like the Freo Group, are already committed to safety, the new cranes on the market are more adaptable, more compact and energy efficient. A system known as VarioBase has been developed. This will allow the crane more flexibility and it will also be able to handle a higher load capacity with a larger area for working by extending the base the crane sits on. Up time can be increased with these new innovations in crane building.

In looking back at the amount of time it took to build with manual labor and comparing it to the new innovations and technologies, the ability to cut cost and guarantee a safer construction site, we can assume we have made great progress in the construction industry.
