The weather is getting warmer, the days are longer, and your mind is full of thoughts of summer—then you are hot, too hot. Something is just not right, you house is not supposed to be hotter than it is outside. Did you forget to switch the heat off? Is the air conditioner turned on? You may have to face the sad reality that just because your AC says it is powered up doesn’t mean it is working properly and you may be in need of AC repairs before you have a major meltdown, literally.
If your air conditioner hasn’t completely died on you yet, you may still be living in denial, but here are some telltale signs that your air conditioner is on its way out and you need to call in the experts, pronto.
Ain’t Nothing Cool About This Air
One of the biggest mistakes you can make is believing that just because you feel air coming through your vents that means your AC is working just fine. You are not imagining the heat in your home; air can still be blowing through the system without getting cool, according to EHow.
If your condenser is broken or if there is not enough refrigerant, you will just end up with hot air blowing through the system. The fix for this will most likely involve finding a leak in the system, having that sealed, and recharging refrigerant.
Strange Sensations
If you think your air conditioner is doing something unusual, it is probably a sign that something is wrong. Yahoo Voices explains that if you hear odd noises within the system or there are weird smells coming out of your vents, these are reasons to be concerned. With the noises, Yahoo explains that there could be a part within the system that is about to, if it hasn’t already done so, go out and not knowing exactly which piece can be dangerous.
There could also be debris stuck in your system that has gotten caught in the fans that is causing the noises—whatever is in there will need to be removed. When it comes to the smells, it very well may be that you just need some new air filters, but you could also have small, dead animals that got into your system over the winter. In either case, it is safest to shut-down the system and call for assistance to check out the source of the strange sound or odor.
Call in the Troops
When it comes to temperatures edging into the 90s and higher, you really don’t want to mess around with not having the proper cooling for your home. High temperatures could be a health hazard, especially for children and the elderly.
You want to be comfortable in your home when the weather is blistering hot, and by being able to recognize signs that something may be off with your cooling system, you can call for AC repairs before you have a full system failure. This will ensure that your family stays cool, stays comfortable, and most importantly stays safe from the heat of summer.
