Dental Health and Beauty: How To Get and Keep That Perfect Smile

It’s your Best Accessory

No, not your designer shoes or bag, your smile is your greatest accessory. Have you noticed how different (better) people look when they smile? Unfortunately, most people don’t smile much. It could be for any number of reasons, but I bet that they are conscious about their teeth. After all, we all hide what we don’t like, right?

So this article is aimed at helping all you ‘non-smilers’ show off your best accessory by getting those teeth looking fabulous. Ready? Here we go:

Keeping it Clean

How often do you get your teeth cleaned? Professionally, that is. Brushing your teeth and flossing at least twice a day is great discipline, but it doesn’t beat having your teeth clean by your dentist. Twice a year is enough and you should have all the stains, bacteria and tartar cleaned away. It also helps the dentist locate any cavities and take care of them before they get out of hand. You can check out http://ddsconnections.com/ to get a dentist, if you don’t already have one.

Eat your Fruits and Veggies

The obvious reason here is to improve and maintain your overall health, which includes your oral health. The other less commonly known reason is that fruits and veggies act like a natural tooth brush. Fruits full of fiber and crunchy vegetables scrub your teeth while you chew, while some like parsley, mint and cucumber freshen your breath by dealing with the bacterial accumulation that causes bad breath. Cool, right?

Don’t Brush your Teeth

Sounds like a contradiction but before you throw out your toothbrush, read on. Studies have shown that fruit juices and pop have relatively high levels of phosphoric and citric acid. These weaken our teeth’s enamel so if you brush your teeth right after having these drinks, you could be scrubbing away some part of your enamel. This then exposes you to various problems, the least of which is tooth sensitivity (and we know how annoying that can be).

So swish around some water in your mouth and wait a while before brushing your teeth.

Don’t Forget your Tongue

Most people brush their teeth religiously but forget the tongue. While it does have a self-cleaning mechanism, it does need cleaning to get rid of all that bacteria which will eventually affect your teeth. So, all you have to do is get a tongue scrapper and swipe it gently over your tongue. That should do the trick!

Be Gentle with Them

Teeth may look tough and they are, as demonstrated by teeth pulling sessions at the dentist. However, the gums are not as tough. So when we go scrubbing our teeth like we do the floor, the gums get injured and tend to recede. As a result, you expose the roots of your teeth to bacteria and on top of that have loose teeth.

The first thing you need to check is your toothbrush. Tougher bristles do more damage and manual toothbrushes tend to be risky if we can’t control the force we are applying. Get an electric toothbrush, nothing too fancy, and get one with soft or medium bristles that won’t hurt your gums.
